HO 42/196 f. 39 Account of William Cooper, 7 Oct 1819. No.3 forwarded by Constables of Manchester to Home Office, 7 Oct. 1819.
Transcribed by Tom Crolla
I was on Duty on the 16 August last as a Special Constable being about 20 yards from the Hustings. The appearance of the different Soldiers coming in out of the County marching in Military order wore a threatening aspect. The ground previous to the meeting was clear from stones, measures having been taken to remove any loose stones from the adjoining Streets. I had no opportunity of noticing on the Monday after the meeting was dispersed the appearance of the ground, but saw the following morning (Tuesday) stones and brickbats scattered about. A considerable quantity of sticks, some of which were very large, were picked up on the Monday by a number of Gentlemen, and brought into my yard, also a part of a cast Iron palisade, very heavy, and which was sent down to the Police Office.
